Product details at a glance

  • Organic ashwagandha root (Withania somnifera).
  • 300 mg of fermented root per capsule.
  • 60 capsules in a glass jar.
  • Plant-based shell.
  • Vegan and gluten-free.

What is ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha is a shrub that grows in India, among other places. The plant has long been used in Ayurveda, traditional Indian medicine.

Supplements use the root, leaves or extracts of these parts. This Living Nutrition formula contains the root. This matters when comparing products, because not every ashwagandha formula uses the same raw ingredient.

The root naturally contains withanolides. These are a group of plant compounds often mentioned in research on ashwagandha. The amount of root is not the same as the amount of withanolides.

Why is ashwagandha being studied?

Scientists are studying ashwagandha in relation to stress and sleep, among other things. Some preparations show promising results in these areas. The studies use different forms of the herb.

A possible benefit does not remove the safety risks. That is why we provide both the composition and advice on use for this product.

How is the root processed?

Living Nutrition uses cultures from water kefir and kombucha for fermentation. Bacteria and yeasts convert substances in the root during this process.

The mixture is then freeze-dried. It is frozen first, after which the moisture is removed. This produces a dry powder for the capsules.

This preparation changes the raw ingredient, but does not prove that the risks mentioned disappear. Organic and fermented are product characteristics, not a guarantee of safe use.

In addition to the root, the formula contains a plant-based capsule shell. No fillers have been added.

The directions on the product packaging are one capsule twice a day with food. This is information about the packaging, not advice to use the product despite the warning.

What does the safety advice mean?

The advice does not only concern large amounts. Serious effects have also been reported in people who followed the instructions on the packaging.

Ashwagandha can also cause drowsiness and gastrointestinal symptoms. Do not use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Its use is also discouraged if you have thyroid problems, autoimmune diseases or a planned operation.

Are you using ashwagandha and experiencing yellow skin, dark urine or severe abdominal symptoms? Stop using it and contact a doctor immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Is ashwagandha the same as Withania somnifera?

Yes, Withania somnifera is the scientific name for ashwagandha. The herb is also called Indian ginseng, but it is not Panax ginseng.

Does fermentation make ashwagandha safe?

You cannot assume that. The advice not to use ashwagandha supplements still applies when the root is fermented.

Does the safety advice only concern taking too much?

No. The RIVM reports that serious effects can also occur when following the instructions on the packaging. A lower amount is therefore not a proven solution.

Does this formula contain leaves?

The part of the plant used is the root. The capsule contains fermented ashwagandha root and a plant-based shell.

Can I use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

No. Do not use ashwagandha during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
