Taking CBD with you on a plane

Can you take CBD oil on a plane? CBD Oil can be a perfect addition to your travel kit. CBD provides numerous benefits whilst travelling by air; hence why it is a popular use when travelling!

CBD products are perfectly legal in the UK and EU. However, due to its association with cannabis, people still get nervous about its usage and are unsure if CBD products are safe to travel with.

In the UK, the rules on buying and selling CBD are clear: it is legal to be sold and consumed because it contains no THC; however, it must be produced from licensed EU approved hemp seeds, and is considered a “novel food” such as oil, capsules, oral sprays, gummies and such. But when it comes to taking your CBD in flight, the rules are a little less clear.

So you are going on a trip and of course, want to arrive at your destination without any problems and start your holiday carefree. Even if you are going on a short business trip, it is good to find out and observe the restrictions with regard to CBD per country. Find out what the rules are for taking a CBD product on the plane.

CBD and THC

CBD is short for cannabidiol and is the non-psychoactive substance from the hemp plant. THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol, which is a component of the cannabis plant that makes people “high”. In most countries, THC is governed by “narcotics” or “stimulants” laws with very strict legal rules. A THC product, such as cannabis oil, Rick Simpson oil, or cannabis oil, may not simply be taken in the suitcase. For medicines, such as medicinal cannabis, which are covered by this law, a Schengen certificate (if you are traveling within the Schengen area) or a medical certificate must be requested.

In most European countries, only CBD products that contain a maximum of 0.05% THC may be legally sold. Whether or not the CBD product you have purchased contains THC and how much, you can often find on the quality report or the test results that are issued or can be requested with the product. In this blog, we continue to assume a CBD product that meets this condition, unless stated otherwise.

Before you fly, 3 things are important:

CBD Oil in hand luggage

Taking CBD oil with you in your hand luggage does not have to be a problem, as long as it is, of course, allowed to take CBD with you to the holiday destination. However, if you are carrying it in your hand luggage, it is important that you must obey the customs legislation. This legislation means that you can only take liquids with you in a container smaller than 100ml. If you have a larger container, you will have to pack it with your hold/checked luggage.

However, we recommend, if possible, taking the CBD oil, CBD capsules, etc. in your hold luggage. At the airport, hand luggage is strictly checked by customs. A cannabis leaf on a package can already raise eyebrows for a customs officer. The image can lead to a relationship with hemp and marijuana and raise questions, leading to a delay. Not a great start to what should have been a pleasant holiday.

Which countries can I travel to with CBD?

Generally, you can travel comfortably in the EU and the US with your CBD oil. But there can be local guidelines and legalities, so it’s always a good idea to do a little research so that you are aware before travelling. Departing from the UK with CBD Oil is not a big issue; however, it is vital to understand the legal rules of your arrival country.

Europe

Countries such as Greece, France, Austria and Spain are safe to travel with CBD oil, as long as the product does not contain more than 0.2% THC. The products of CBDolie.nl all contain a maximum of the legally permitted content of THC and can therefore be taken to the aforementioned countries without any concerns.

Some European countries require a prescription from a medical professional. CBD is completely illegal in Slovakia and Belgium. So be well-informed before you leave.

North and South America

CBD is legal in all 50 US states; however, it must contain less than 0.3% THC. Canada has legalised both recreational and medicinal use of cannabis products, so it should be safe to travel with CBD Oil.

CBD law in South America varies from country to country; most countries, such as Mexico and Brazil, have legalised CBD for medical usage with controlled THC levels.

Africa and Australia

CBD is more restricted in Africa. Most countries, including Angola, Morocco, Kenya, and Egypt, have banned any usage of cannabis, including CBD.
Like Africa, CBD products are quite restrictive in Australia. They are considered “schedule products” where it is only available through a medical prescription from a doctor.

Asia

In Asia, CBD laws are very much influenced by culture, tradition, and religion, so the rules vary depending on which country you are aiming to travel to. For instance, in Japan and Hong Kong, CBD products can be used as long as there are no traces of THC whatsoever. In Singapore, however, the use of any cannabis products are treated with severe penalties.

Customs or embassy

Customs in your country may be able to answer your questions about travelling with a CBD product. However, they only advise on the regulations of travel with CBD upon departure in your country and arrival in your country.

For other countries, search via Google for the website of the airport and the customs of the travel destination. If you are flying to Malaga, search via Google for “Malaga airport customs”.

If you want certainty about the regulations in countries other than your own country, so from where you are going to leave or where you arrive, you should contact the customs of the country in question. You can also consult your own embassy, if available, in the country to which you fly.

For those who are nervous travellers, CBD Oil can be a perfect solution whilst flying. If you are planning to air-travel with CBD Oil, we suggest doing thorough research about your airlines, airport rules, departing and arriving countries. All airlines have their own set of rules and regulations, so it is always good to talk to relevant airlines and get much-needed details before your flight.

Our conclusion and recommendation

When in doubt: always check with the customs, embassy, or airline for the legal rules applicable at that time with regard to the transport of a CBD product.
