What are cannabinoids and what is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol, an active substance that comes from the cannabis or hemp plant. CBD is just one of the hundred or so cannabinoids that occur naturally in the hemp plant. THC, CBG and CBDA are some other cannabinoids.

CBD is what is known as a phytocannabinoid, “phyto” being Greek for “plant’. In molecular terms CBD and the other active substances from the cannabis plant are very similar to the endocannabinoids that animals and humans manufacture themselves.

What are hemp pellets?

Hemp pellets are nutritional pellets that are saturated with hemp extract. This hemp extract is rich in phytocannabinoids: cannabinoids that occur naturally in the hemp plant.

The hemp pellets from Renova contain a minimum of 0.3% or cannabinoids and are specially developed for birds.

Can you give CBD to birds?

Indeed, CBD can also be given to our feathered friends. Mammals, birds and fish also have an ‘endocannabinoid system’, not just humans. Endo means ‘within’, so it is the body’s own system. And just like in humans, this system is also involved in animals’ important bodily functions that contribute to the body’s normal functions. These include things like perception of pain, the motor system, mood and state of mind, and blood pressure. Birds also have an endocannabinoid system, through which the hemp pellets can service as a powerful support for their general health and well-being.

Why give CBD to your bird?

Caged birds are completely dependent on humans for their food, water and health care. This is the complete opposite of birds in the wild; they can find seeds, nuts and fruit themselves. Birds are naturally already attracted to hemp seeds because of the high concentrations of fat, high-quality proteins and fibre. Not all pre-packaged bird food contains hemp seeds, which means that the hemp pellets can form a valuable supplement to the bird seeds your bird already receives. For animals too, it is important to keep the body in homeostasis. Homeostasis is the regulation and maintenance of balance of the internal environment of both humans and animals.

What is the difference between hemp seeds and the CBD hemp pellets?

Unprocessed hemp seed is also used as bird food. It is a delicacy for both outdoor and indoor birds. These hemp seeds are very nutritious and have many uses, including hemp seed oil, which should not be confused with hemp oil, which contains CBD.

These particular hemp seeds are not meant to be cultivated and will not produce hemp plants. This also means that the hemp seeds already in bird food contain little or no cannabinoids. They do not have enough time to develop these secondary metabolites. The plants do not contain cannabinoids (active substances) until a few weeks are passed.

CBD hemp pellets or CBD oil for birds?

CBD can be administered in various ways. CBD oil is the most common way of administering it to humans, and is absorbed through the mucous membranes under the tongue and directly into the bloodstream. You can probably imagine that getting drops of CBD oil under a bird’s tongue would be difficult.

Hemp pellets can be easily mixed with the bird food and given directly to the bird. Do you like convenience? Then the hemp pellets would be ideal.

Are the hemp pellets suitable for parrots?

The hemp pellets are full of good nutrients that are also highly beneficial to parrots, and therefore also suitable for them. And aside from the excellent nutritional value, parrots absolutely love the nutty flavour!

To provide birds with the best possible support with the hemp pellets, it is highly recommended to keep to the dosing guidelines for birds. The following guidelines apply for Renova hemp pellets:

• Add 1 spoonful (spoon is enclosed) to the bird’s daily feed.

As most birds are small creatures, we recommend starting out with a very low dosage and gradually increasing it until you find the correct dosage for your bird. Dosage can be administered every 6-8 hours, up to three times a day.

Nutritional values

Each hemp pellet is produced naturally in Colorado, as are all other Renova products. Local farmers monitor the air and soil quality very closely. No pesticides, solvents are other chemical agents are used in the production process of the hemp pellets, so you are assured of a completely safe and natural product.

The hemp pellets have a minimum cannabinoid content of 0.3%; in addition they contain 20% of plant-based proteins, 30% of insoluble fibres and 50% complex carbohydrates. The hemp meal used for the production of the hemp pellets is sterilised, sieved and mixed in for the safety, workability and consistency of the product.

To prevent mould, an FDA-approved mould inhibitor is added to the hemp pellets (the FDA is an agency of the United States government). This increases the shelf-life of the pellets.

Animal-friendly: contains 0.0% THC

THC, the psychoactive little brother of CBD, is not used in Renova products, including the hemp pellets. This means that the hemp pellets are not at all psychoactive and it is not possible to become high or stoned from them. This is good, as it is partly for this reason that animals can also benefit from the beneficial qualities of CBD products such as hemp pellets.
